Dark red cherry, plum, graphite, gravel, smoke and cured meats all take shape in the 2013 La Dame de Montrose. Deceptively medium in body, this tightly-wound, mineral-driven red offers plenty of potential, although it will need time in bottle to soften some of the contours. A distinctly savory, floral minerally finish rounds things out. There is a lot to like here, including the wine's considerable early appeal and relatively delicate personality. This is a terrific second wine. Tasted twice.
69% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc. Pure cassis and cedar – very classic, very correct. Manages to conjure plenty of body as well – really satisfying and complete. Modest length. Very traditional, yet with modern drinkability.
Montrose
Once a famed hunting area, Chateau Montrose is one of the leading winemaking estates in Saint Estephe. The wine is Cabernet Sauvignon dominated - dark, full bodied, muscular and rich. In 2006 the estate was bought by the Pouygues family, who invested €55 million in a high speed environmentally-friendly renovation. This is a wine to treasure in the cellar.
